About Frank.

Frank Sanford, born in 1943, lived in the North Western United States before moving to Ireland, where he has lived in The Burren, County Clare, for over 25 years. Frank works in many mediums, (acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolour, as well as charcoal), painting landscapes, life drawing and still life. His work, which has received many awards, has found homes all over the world, including his native America and his adopted home of Ireland

His primary education was at the University of Cincinnati, where he studied architecture, which included life drawing and other art classes. He then went on to study painting at the University of Oregon, as well as in the renowned Art Students League of New York. Frank studied privately with some of the early greats of, what was known as, ‘California Scene Painting’, which flourished between 1920s and 1960s. He also studied with some of the great American watercolourists and nature artists. These master artists have had a huge impact on Frank and helped him to realise how vital it was to learn to paint as himself, exploring what inspires him. Since then he has focused on the practice of painting rather than following instruction. This has always been his mission as a painter.
